So my family is looking to buy a fancy place in florida for the winters..
Preferably along the west coast i guess as thats less prone to huricanes (or is it not?)

Anyone got an idea where to look?
What are good real estate sites to look for offers?

I've never lived in florida so I couldn't say, but if you are using it for winter time only then it doesn't really matter.
Hurricane season is from june to october.

well i don't think i'd like it if i was to return to florida in winter to find a wrecked pile of wood....

Historically, the north western coast has had fewer serious strikes from hurricanes. I don't live in Florida but I am 45 Miles from the Florida State line at Alabama. But, basically all of Florida is some what vulnerable. Plus Building codes are pretty strenuous to try and minimize the amount of damage caused.

Theres a bigger risk of a huge earthquake on the west than on the east, so you are safe from that aspect :P

And less tornadoes than in the Midwest, so safer in that aspect.

And No volcanoes at all.

My grandparents own a home in Fort Myers, Florida, which is about 20 min inland from the Gulf of Mexico. They use it for winter time as well, and have been there for several years and have luckily had no hurricane damage. I believe Hurricane Charley went over them a couple of years ago but they escaped with minimal - to no damage. Not sure if the West Coast is supposedly safer than the East, but they haven't had much problems on the West in their location. (Fort Myers is like an hour south of Tampa I believe). Not sure what Real Estate they used, but they are in a gated community. Hope that helps.

I used to live on Sanibel Island which is off of Ft Myers. I'd suggest looking at Naples/Cape Coral. Good real estate there. I'd suggest West Coast cause the Gulf of Mexico is always warm year round and it's great for fishing!

You may want to research the Mexico City and Port San Blas area. They are about an hour south of Panama City... However, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach as well as Dauphin Island I know to be a fact, you can buy nicely priced beach houses, but most people can not afford the insurance if you have to fianance it..

I suggest you pick another state as most of Florida will be underwater within the next 100 years thanks to the Greenland Icecap melting. :)
