Everyone has their own opinions, I would think my top countries for beer would be:

Germany
Ireland
Netherlands
Canada
USA
Great Britain

I have also heard New Zealand, Czech Republic, Croatia are good as well although I don't think I've ever tried these beers.

Bram tells me Belgium is good but I've never tried their beer either so I'm not sure, lol.

Belgium beer is pretty good, they got loads of local beers etc). But they don't know how to sell them abbroad :P. But my favourite beers are still from my home country :).

Belgium has the most famous beers in the world. And the best.

No wonder Interbrew (now Inbev-Anhouser Bush) is a Belgian company !!

We have a beer in every town, so to speak.

Leffe, a famous beer. They used to brew this in the Abbey of Leffe, but now it's made in Louvain (hmm, my uni is there)

International reputation

Although taste is highly subjective and individual, many international beer drinkers consider the Westvleteren 12 to be among their favourite beers. The members of BeerAdvocate.com[4] and RateBeer.com[5], two beer rating websites, consistently rate the Westvleteren 12 as their most enjoyable beer; the 8 and the Blonde also rank highly on both sites.
In June 2005, when Westvleteren 12 was again highlighted as "Best Beer in the World" in a bi-annual competition on RateBeer.com, news organizations followed this up and articles appeared in the international press, highlighting the beer ranking and the unusual business policies.
Following these events, interest in Westvleteren's output increased, and stories appeared of the abbey's stock being low, forcing the monks to reduce the amount of beer sold to each customer. Though stocks have always been low and supplies have always been limited and uncertain. In an interview with Belgian newspaper De Morgen, monk Mark Bode explained that the abbey had no intention of increasing its production, despite demand.
Despite the popularity, the monks of St Sixtus have continued to decline almost all interview and visit requests, and have not enjoyed all of the attention they have received. Non-monastic visitors to the abbey are usually turned away, instead being directed to the visitor's centre opposite where there is information about the abbey and brewery. They have stated a desire to live a peaceful monastic life, and find the resulting interruptions quite intrusive.source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westvleteren_Brewery#International_reputation)

Belgium beer is pretty good, they got loads of local beers etc). But they don't know how to sell them abbroad :P. But my favourite beers are still from my home country :).

sry to douple post, but w/e

I saw Hoegaarden being sold in Prague ...

Which country doesn't have a Belgian Bar, where they serve Belgian beers and Belgian food?
I know there was one in Prague (that's not even where I saw the Hoegaarden being sold :s ), in Bejing (broadcasted the Olympics from there) etc.etc.etc.

To be honest, the only not-Belgian beer I liked so far was DAB, which I drank in Italy this summer.

@ Dennis : Heineken is kattepis :P:P:P

from what I here its German beer.

I like yuengling which is dubbed to be America's oldest domestic beer. I must say I am getting a bit sick of it. I think I will try Heiniken.

Coors Lite is the number one beer sold in America, so going by the stat Coors Lite is the best beer in the US, but alot of us "real" beer drinkers wouldnt even consider it on the list. Unfortunately the numbers speak for themselves.

I hear German beer is the best too. As for Coors Light, I can't stand that stuff!!! I know it's the #1 in the U.S, and that is highly disappointing. lol

Bram, I have never seen Belgium beer here in the U.S. However different geographical parts of the country are pretty different beer wise. However I'm in the heavy populated Northeast and I have the faintest clue what Belgium beer is like or yet see it sold. :P

Heineken /*\shivers/*\
How on earth can you drink Heineken? That's just cat's piss in a green bottle. Tried it once, and I'm telling you : never again.

IDK where I read this, but beer in green bottles is damaged by the sun and turned into cat's piss (not literally, but w/e). That's why all good beer comes in brown bottles.

@Bozz: Hertog Jan is ok, forgot to mention that, my fault. that's from Inbev as well btw.

Quack (or something like that) is good beer as well (or so I heard). It is nice that when you finish your glass, it makes a sound (which one? "Quack", duh)

I'm practically half Irish but for some reason I can't stand Guinness. I guess it's too dark for me. Which is a shame, everyone says how good it is, and I'd love to drink it but my taste buds tell me to drink something better. :P

The majority of my favorite beers are Canadian. In New York where we border Canada (and I'm 20 min from the border) we have a lot of Canadian beer distributed so we have a lot of exposure. Labatt Blue and Molson are near the top of my list.

Heineken isn't too bad. I think it's a bit overrated in my opinion, but it's certainly more unique than the other beers I'm used to and I don't mind it.

Excuse me, I've been very generous and saying great things about Canadian Beer, I don't need you slandering and bashing American beer in my thread! This is about what nations create the best beer, not bash America's beer because you have to bash every little single thing about America. Sam Adams is a great American beer. It's just a running Joke we have up here in Canada, about American Beer, it is on average it seems 1-2% lighter in alcohol content than Canadian.

I have never tried Sam Adams, I suppose I will look for it at the Beer store here in town, thanks.

indeed it is about 1% avg lighter than Canadian... it's why I prefer majority of Canadian beers over majority of American beers. :) I think Coors Light tastes like water, along with several others that are just downright bad, lol. Yuengling, Sam Adams, and Miller Light are among my favorite American beers. But I'd probably take a European and Canadian beer instead anyday.

i sadly have to agree with Z here. i tried Bush, Budwiser and Coros Light.. its piss mixed iwth water.

only non-german beers i've tasted (and i had a lot) that didn't make me shrug in disgust the first time were, Corona, Fosters (Australian, almsot only sold outside of Australia tho... jsut bought myself 20 liters of that :D), Guiness and Kilkenny (also Irish, but nobody ever heared of it in the UK apparantly :P )
altho admitedly i never had easter neuropean beer. i heaar budwiser (the real one) is suppsoed to be quite good.

but don't get me wrong, not all german beer is good. Haven't drunken anything northern german where i didn't die a little inside when drinking it. Sadly Becks is the only german beer you can get at a reasonable price here... and its the worst of all german beers, yet still better than anythign britsh.
Good bavarian beer costs around £1.5 (over $2.2) around here, per bottle!

Anyways, I'm a fan of the dark lager/bock/doppelbocks...of course, being in the US doesn't get you exposed to much of that, so I'm afraid I'm missing out on some of the best. However, and I'm sure many of you won't have an idea what I'm talking about cept maybe the midwestern-ers, but Leinenkugel's was a local-microbrewery that was established in the late 1800's..and it became fairly successful. So much in fact, that Miller ended up buying them out (bastards :cursing:). But, I've known a few Belgium and Danish foreign exchange students who claim that their dark brews (creamy dark and big butt) were the only american beers they could stand drinking, so, if you guys can manage to get a hold of some, give it a try. Their other season pale ales...summer shandy, sunset wheat, etc suck...but their dark brews are delicious...Their regular isn't bad either.

// Drinks Hoegaarden atm //

IDK about all the beers mentioned above, but if it matches one of these descriptions, it sucks:
- the beer is not not in a dark-brown bottle
- the beer tastes like piss, cat's piss to be more precise.
- bartenders always put a piece of lemon in the bottle/glass when you buy one. (wink wink ... Corona ruled out)
- The beer contains ethanol (hmm, Max, sounds familiar? Like I said before, they don't use ethanol, that's just weird...)
- The beer tastes like and looks like lemonade ... That rules out the French beer called Boomerang... flashy green beer wtf?
- The beer is not alcohol-free or almost alcohol-free.

No, but that doesn't mean that I don't know how they do it. They do not use ethanol !
((in Dutch, b/c I don't know what it's called in English and I'm too lazy to find out))
IIRC, the grains (gerst & hop) used to produce beer don't contain enough sugar to make enough alcohol. That's why they let a small plant grow from the gerst and then drying them. The grains are then called mout. By crushing the grains and heating them, the enzyms that were created when the small plant started to grow become active and produce sugar. This stuff is called wort
They boil the hop and add the wort. By boiling it, the thing becomes even sweeter.
It is that sugar that is converted to alcohol (ethanol) by yeast. This can be done at low temperatures (6-8 °C), which takes weeks and is done in a lot of colder countries. The yeast will sink to the bottom. It can also be done at higher temperatures (15-20 °C), which takes only days and is done mostly in Belgium and England. The yeast floats on top of the beer, which is why you completely empty a bottle of Belgian beer, that's where all the yeast is.

Satisfied, Max?

I wonder : when did they put the ethanol in? Oh, that's right. They didn't.

The first word says it all. Goodbye!

I`ve been there and seen how they make it. My friend work at the factory and my job is just 100 meters away. My father makes beer, my grandfather does. So don`t try to tell me what you`ve read someplace, pffft

Nope, just a saying.
But you made me remember a big question about Harry Potter: How did Dumbledore know that his candy tasted like earwax?

Where do you live?

Sorry if it wasn't clear, but all I wrote about making beer is mostly about the BELGIAN technique. So I don't care what the production process in your country/town/factory is like, b/c Belgian beer producers don't add ethanol.
IIRC, I live closer to Belgium than you, so give it a rest, will you.

Actually, we make the 2nd best beer in Europe after Germany. That was announced in one of those expositions or whatever they`re having.

Can`t remember the 1st place brand. but ours was 2nd.

Never heard of Belgium beer, ever

That's what we call "een gat in uw cultuur"
feel free to find a translation site.

Like i said before, in 2007, a Belgian beer was chosen the best beer in the world. The production of that beer is very limited... so limited one could only buy 24 bottles per person/ per car.
No wonder it sells at € 10,- per glass in bars ...

Max, visit Belgium. No sight-seeing necessary. Just enter the first bar you find and ask for beer. I guarantee you will drink the best beer in your entire life in that bar. If they have Leffe, Hoegaarden, Chimay or La Chouffe. Which they will.

best beer hmmm, germany and Czech republic.

i haven't tried yet UK/Ireland ones, they seem to be pretty diferent from "normal" beers, so i can't comment on those ones.

Czech republic beer is very light, but you drink it in 0.5Liters :D

most of the domestic beers are ales. but other than that its mainly like carlsberg and that kidna stuff. nothing good.

except for cider

Natty's really? *puke*

New Glarus..lol..it's not bad...I prefer fat squirrel, myself

Their other season pale ales...summer shandy, sunset wheat, etc suck...but their dark brews are delicious...Their regular isn't bad either.

danish beers should be made illegal.

Cider isn't beer. It's made from apples (or other fruit), not grain.

None of you has ever drinked Estonian beer, right? Even Max? First try Saku Hele, A. Le Coq Pilsner, Alexander etc. and then start making top-lists lol. Btw, max, i didnt know that there was latvian beer, i only heard that Estonian breweries have some of their production in Latvia. Lol it reminds me when I first bought beer in Latvia. One was named SWH Rock, 5,3% alc. We have Saku Rock, 5,3%. You have/had Cesu Premium, we have A. le Coq Premium, alc % the same again..

i Used to live on the same road as a brewery that made HSB (Horndean special brew ;))

the open days were awsome, free beer all day. Since then its closed now, so i cant really say it attributes to the UKs list of "Good Beers" any more... at the time, it was well renound in the area tho. Fullers bought the brand and now they make it in london... so its bound to be crap.

How is US even on this list? i thought everyone knew they dont make real beer, i mean come on, its like someone said earlier, thier fav beer is coors light!

Btw Bram, stella is expencive because supposedly its one of the oldest lagers ever... and supposedly theyve never changed the way they make it.... so that means its gonna have loads of crap in it but still gonna cost alot to produce.

think ill sum up my 2cents to this topic with......

real men drink ales ;) (i find its a slightly less Death provoking alternative to ethanol )

Shhhhh!! The Americans that like Coors light have been hypnotized and forced into liking it. Seriously though... I have no clue why it's popular here. I think it's one of the worst light beers I've had.
