My prayers are with you.

Things like this put life into perspective very swiftly.

My best wishes to all those affected by the eartquake and tsunami.

Maybe. We'll see how this whole nuclear reactor mess turns out. Really hoping the scientists and engineers are able to get that under control before any big meltdowns happen.

The Japanese were really well prepared for this which is paying some huge dividends for them now. Nuclear plants in the US aren't even required to have battery back-up systems and many don't, or don't maintain and test them.

I love the "experts" who've been saying for years that nuclear is safe and clean. The hell it is. All it has is a good track record. And you know what, so does the airline industry. The difference is when the airline industry occasionally fails, at most 100-200 people are at risk. When the nuclear industry fails hundreds of thousands or even millions of poor souls are SoL.

But at least its clean right? As long as we ignore the enormous amounts of coal powered energy it takes to make the fuel and the radioactive waste left over at the end. Yeah, it's clean.

Best thing to come out of all this would be if nuclear energy gets taken more seriously than it is now.

Coal certainly is not clean nor safe. Living in coal country, I can attest to that.

To go back to the nuclear plant situation, things are becoming worse, potentially much much worse. Reactor #2 has experienced an explosion of some sort, potentially causing the outside containment to be compromised. This is very very bad if that is true. And there's a fire (though, claimed to be an ordinary one) at reactor #4.

A nice collection of what's being reported/not reported.

Surreal eh? It's like something out of science fiction.

Some recent interesting lines I've seen:

NY Times: "the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station [is] the worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl reactor disaster a quarter century ago."

NY Times: "radiation levels [were] measured at one point as high as 400 millisieverts an hour. Even 7 minutes of exposure at that level will reach the maximum annual dose that a worker at an American nuclear plant is allowed."

Reuters: "'Minute levels' of radiation are detected in Tokyo and Kyodo" (Which are pretty friggan far away from the radiation source)

Things are getting worse with the #3 and #4 reactors. #5 and #6 are still heating up.

The US is in debt to Japan something like $840 billion. How about instead of "donating" money to them, we get to buy back a little piece of America? I mean, it's a horrible tragedy, but it seems they're keeping pretty good track of every penny we owe them, why should we just "donate" to them because they're having a crisis?
