I prefer umm.. paternoster rig?! fishing. Well, I like to fish on the sea/lake/river bottom. As fishers yourself, you understand. My main target is European eel but its more like a prize for spending a whole season at the riversides (2-3 eels per season usually, which is from may to september). Fishing for tench is also very addictive for me. Actually, I fish whenever and whereever and whatever I can lol. After moving to West Estonia, which is very poor with rivers and lakes, Im quite depressed. Thou the sea is like 20-30 kilometres from my house, still, its a half hour ride and sea isnt quite my thing. So talking about fanatic fishing from West Estonia for me is like twisting a knife in the wound lol.
Anyways, a few pics from me,
http://www.kalale.ee/sisu/Nyw5MjQxNzksMyx6YXhaLDE/ My son, when he was 1,5 week old and my biggest bream. They were about the same weight and size then.
http://www.kalale.ee/sisu/Nyw3Njg4MjMsMyx6YXhaLDE/ I spend many nights to catch one of those.

that looks like a HUGE yellow perch which is native to my region.

im pretty lucky to have salt and fresh with in minutes of my house. salt is quick but fresh is what I really want to be better at. as far as salt the big prize in the bay is rockfish aka striped bass.

zaxZ man I hate an eel. But That is just me I guess. We have little green eels here and they just look too much like a snake for my taste. Although, that is a huge bream!!! We have yellow perch in my ponds too.

My last deep sea trip I hooked a 9 ft hammer head shark. got him up to the boat and cut him free but he was HUGE!!!

Damn it, MAGGIO, you reminded me with your pics of my broken UL rod. Got it for present couple yrs ago. Then my brother (who isnt much of a fisher) borrowed it, without asking. Got the lure stuck on the river bottom and that sucker started just pulling with the rod. I had a damn ultra strong rope on it (i mean a rope not a plastic line). So its broken into 4 pcs. That reminds me that I should remind my brother that. He promised to repair it or fix it. And I have caught duck and grayfish but a turtle, wow. Well, not to mention, we dont have turtles here.
Dogma, smoked eel is like.. sex in my mouth. I guess, if it wasnt so difficult to catch them, maybe they wouldnt taste so good lol. Anyways, how heavy is your largest catfish? You live in the South, right?

Dogma
08-25-2013, 17:24
I do live in the south but I don't get to fish catfish often. The ponds I fish in were stocked with bream and bass. Although, a 50 to 70# catfish is not uncommon in my area. The ling I have pictured was about 30 and was a lot of fun to catch but even better to eat.

I went for a little while this morning but the wind blowing too hard on the lake. That is the thing about fishing these woods ponds I fish, it is so quiet that the least little sound or ripple in the water spooks the fish. Not to mention the 30" of rain we have had in the last 2 months doesn't help either...

Went out Sat morning. Woke up a bit too early not really knowing when the sun was coming up. what great weather I had.

Started off all frogs (I have 5 frog lures) Had 3 serious misses while doing a high tempo dog walk but no hook ups.

Usually what I do is fish all morning with lures, but when it comes down to the last hour and I have not caught anything, I go live bait/bait. I went and caught a few blue gills with pink berkley gulp alive maggots on a mosquito hook and live lined them with a 6/0 circle hook and small bobber.

Went out yesterday afternoon. Tried a few of my spots with no luck, hunting for panfish and maybe a rock. I ended up in a brackish pond off little off of the upper bay. Hooked 13 white perch. Not too big but fun enough. The tide was coming in, and it was pushing water into the lake. You could see the current and tons of top water strikes popping all over the place. I just through my pan fish lures in the mix and snagged one after another for about 30 minutes as the sun set. Johnson Beetle Spin Black with Chart tips is my go to, but also had luck with a locally supplied lure called the perch pounder. I put a berkley gulp 1' minnow chart as a trailer to what I can only describe as a tight pocket spinner bait. Chesapeake Bay White Perch are similar in size of a blue gill and citation is 13" but they fight like hell on ultra light. Some say they are one of the best tasting but I have not taken any home and cleaned them yet.

White perch is a helluva nice table fare. Glad you had some good luck. I am now getting my camp ready for hunting season, lots of bush hogging, disking and planting. Repairing blinds and the like. Fishing on the back burner for now till I get all that finished up.

Last thrus, fri, sat, sun, and mon I went to OCEAN CITY, MD and did some surf fishing. I picked up an old Penn Spinfisher 6500, Penn 10' M/H Big Game Surf Rod, and used 30lb power pro braid. Ended up with 7 small sand sharks, and two other fish I have not been able to identify, but look like croaker/spot.

70-75 degrees, with 10-15 mph wind made for perfect fishing conditions (one day was too windy)

it was EXTREMELY LAZY fishing as I got to sleep in every day and fished from 10-1, but since it was producing fish i didnt bother going earlier, even though I should have.

had to forego sat for my son's football game, but I hit up my local river on sunday morning. weather was pretty much PERFECT, low 70s slight breeze. I had the place to myself less a dog walker or two. HEAVY rains the night before, and this was a little runoff river that the areas streams ran into so there was lots of fresh water. The tide was up and I was waiting for it to start to run. I could hear Pickerel hitting minnows in the reeds.

I had some blood worms left over from the ocean trip so I needed to use them. I ran two rods. one with a bottom feeder fish finder with a small circle hook to catch bait fish (spot, white perch etc..) My second rod was set up with a 7/0 circle hook for cut bait.

I got luck right way with a small spot fish which I quickly live lined with a 6/0 circle hook an bobber. Something grabbed the spot in the first few minutes it was out there, and I started reeling in my catch only to find that my spot fish has been bitten in half (pickerel). OH WELL I cut the head off and sent it back out with a bottom fish finder (inline weight with a 2' leader) and let that sit out there a while. Had a good ol bell clipped to my rod. something started tugging! I reeled a pretty big hull considering i was on light tackle.

It was a 23' blue channel catfish which is a decent size given this river.

I kept on fishin

the tide started running and i caught a few small white perch. I used one of them for cut bait and set up my heavier rod once again. about 30 min later i was able to pull in another catfish, but this time 16+"

all in all it was a good day. didnt get up too early and got back by lunch time. (my stomach was killing me that morning, so I stayed put at this one location)

Last night went to the community fishing pier. I was pretty much all to myself for most of the time minus a few evening strollers. I was able to catch Spot Fish (bait) on demand. I was actually being a little wasteful only using the best portion of the fish as bait and refreshing it often. I was STILL using my left over Blood Worms from the Ocean City trip.

at first I used a top and bottom rig to catch bait, cut the bait and put a chunk on a Fish Finder Rig and threw it out there on a 6/0 circle hook. After I got some fresh bait, I used my bait rod to Live Line some of the Spot Fish. I wasnt getting any hits on the live line. Its fall so Rock Fish (striped bass) should be coming up the Chesapeake Bay.

I ended up with some SOLID hits on my Fish Finder but no hook ups. a school of Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs moved in and kept nibbling at my cut bait.

I went back to the Top and Bottom Rig and just kept catching fish in the 4-10" range to pass the time. I was out from 730-1015pm. There was NO wind, and although a bit chilly it was quiet as a mouse and the water was absolutely calm. The stars were shining last night. all and all it was a good trip regardless of not catching the BIG ONE.

And when you do it right beside a lake or river.. tired from fishing all day, you light a fire and make the soup on it.. its the best food ever lol. And J?germeister or some other herb liquer for dessert :).

Im lately eating like a real hunter. Wild boar, moose and deer mostly. Got it from relative to my wife. By the way, Dogma, whats the hunting tradition in the States? Can you just go by yourself or with couple or friends? I mean, here, its like regulated so that if you want to shoot some animal, you have to collect a big bunch of men and then its allowed. Imo you cannot hunt with just a few dudes.

PS! If any Estonian plans to buy sinkers for "bottomfishing", then contact me. 80g, 100g, 120g and 140g handmade (by me) and very cheap.

zaxZ, I hunt alone all the time. I always tell someone where I am hunting and when I will be back to the house so someone knows where I am. I don't believe in hunting accidents only hunting stupidities and I try not to be stupid. I never travel with a chambered round. I always use safety devices for climbing and so on and so forth so I feel pretty safe hunting like that. Plus I am hunting in my own back yard. The gun I hunt with is known to have a faulty safety mechanism so I know to be extremely careful while transporting and handling it while traveling. My wife is usually in the house while I am in the woods so she is never more than 80 acres away.
