    Default Latvia and ESTONIA

The oldest Christmas tradition in Estonia takes place on Christmas Eve when the whole family goes to visit the sauna together.

    Interesting.

Do any Estos here do this?

n Latvia, "Big Zimmer," the Latvian Santa Claus, brings presents not on just one day, but 12 days in a row. It's also here in Latvia that the Christmas tree tradition was first celebrated, although the holiday doesn't celebrate Jesus, but the re-birth of the Sun Maiden.

Max that sounds pretty cool. Latvia knows whats up!

please keep in mind that the christmas tree, nor the date on which we celebrate christmas has anything to do with jezus. 25 december has always been a celebration, even before christanity had a break through in europe. The celebration was here to celebrate the event of de shortest day, from now on the get longer till the 21st of june. Christianity just took the opportunity to ram the birth of jezus thru our troats (since people kept celebrating old traditions and the church didn't like them doing that, so they stole the celebrations )

Roughly translating our celebration means Winter Celebration, the day in which night is the longest.

And our 'Santa' is named Salavecis, meaning, Freezing/Frozen Man

Dunno about the 12 days in row...that`s just for me, cuz my birthday is on the 3rd of January
