Do Estonians Like or Hate the USSR?

I was doing a little reading on Estonia, since allot of the players are from there and I wanted to know a little bit about you guys.

Seems they were tied up in some stuff with the USSR when it was the USSR. I couldn't decipher whether you guys hate Russians or Like Russians as a whole or opinion?

Estonia seems like a pretty cool place from what I was reading. Considered "high income" among other things.

I think all of us former Wow'ers should take a moment and get to know our neighbors since we (most of us) had very limited experience with them.

They disliked them when occupied and there now part of the european union, so im guessing dislike.

Who like russians anyway? In Finland we even have like semi-curseword for russians, "ryssä". (maybe lil similar than the N-word for blacks)

It's more complicated than just hate or love. But definitely there is more hatred, because besides the point that we have had our own nation for about 16 years now, majority of Russians living in Estonia don't want to agree with it.
For example, many Russians don't want to learn Estonian, even teachers in educational system. Of course there are exceptions, I know many Russians who speak Estonian fluently.

There are groups of people called nationalists (nazis), i guess in American terms you can refer to it as a gang. They deal with Russians or other nations who are a threat to Estonia's independence. I know many of them, they remain calm, as long as every body acknowledges the fact that Russians must not live(permanently) in Estonia while not speaking Estonian. But run as fast as you can if you happen to confront a true nazi and don't speak Estonian.

I speak Russian as a third language, but I just don't understand why the he'll they won't learn Estonian. After all they are living here willingly. There is no one stopping them moving back to mother Russia. Conducted surveys show that they don't want to go back to Russia, because it sucks there, life is better here.

I've heard that the reason why Estonia is quite liberal(low flat tax, not too much regulation) is the fact that they have experienced hard times under communism and they know what its like and they tries to do everything quite differently than Soviet Union did.

Of course Estonia is still a nation with oppressive government (governments are inherently oppressive) and its part of democratic process that when welfare gets better the state will grow and will oppress ppl even more.
(For example, few hundred years ago United States was the smallest government in earth with strict regulations what it can do (called constitution) but after few centuries its the biggest government and one of the most oppressive governments in earth.)

(The logic goes like this: if the productivity of the society grows, it's gives change for governments to grow, and then productivity goes down and it gives then usually some limitations for government expenditure, cause at some point raising taxes wont increase tax income. We can see that some eastern Europe countries have had huge growth numbers only for two reasons: small government(small regulations, low taxes) and the catch-up effect). The main reason for growth to stop (and ppls wellbeing to come down or stay the same) is then government growth.

Whats good in Estonia is that the nation is small and it gives usually some benefits, or limitations to growth of government.

Keep up the good work Estonia, and continue lowering your taxes, i might move there some day
