Science is bought and used by Nations to put into their development centers. There you can see the catagories that you can raise. Food production, money production, population growth, industrial production are beneficial to the 3 strategies you can run (farmer, indy, and casher). If you put science in the Medical one, it'll reduce the amount of military losses in battles.
You can produce science to put on the Public Market if you build Science Facilities. You can increase science production per turn if you use Research. Nations will then use money in their banks to buy your science off the public market.
So individuals should not buy science, only sell science.

Most states that do produce science, only produce it for a short while to get started, then they swap to another strat, usually farmer.
